Somalia: Islamist announce new dress code for women

On Wednesday, the Al Shabab militants controlling the city of Baidoa (Bay region of Somalia) announced a new decrees ordering women in public, to cover themselves up in all times.

Abdiasis Mohamed the Al Shabaab leader in Baidoa told the Media that they were giving the civilians three days to comply with the new rules.

The groups announced that there will be sever punishments for women who did not wear the right clothing outside their homes. Every women is ordered to were Jalbaab Hijab (covering the whole body)

Most Somali women in Bay region were used to wearing more traditional dressing and other Somali dresses, that might show some parts of the body like the face and hands.

Al Shabaab administration announced the punishment for women who don’t obey the dress code will be sent to prison for 12 hours.

The Islamist group Al Shabaab took over the town of Baidao in January 2009, when the Somali Federlad Parlaiment vacated their seat in that city. After the government troops and Ethiopian forces withdrew from the region.

Since the take over, the Islamist hardliners carried out sentences, including the executions of murders and thieves in the city.

Al Shabaab group said they would restore law and order. The city is now fully controlled by their militia and there is some stability.
