On Friday, Hizbul Islam insurgent group began their last push to down town Beledweyn, the capital of Hiiraan region central Somalia, clashing with the Islamic courts union fighters.
Fighters loyal to Hizbul Islam group and soldiers of the Islamic union administration in Beledweyn, exchanged heavy weapons in the vicinity of (Big Bridge) neighborhood, where the main police station is located.
Latest reports say the fighting is continuing well in to the night, still no reports on the casualties.
The fighting erupted just hours after the people in Beledweyn celebrated the opening of a new University in the town.
The university of Beledweyn opened its doors today, while many civilians continue to flee the city for fears of more violence.
Beledweyn the capital of Hiiraan region is controlled by the Islamic courts union movement, an ally of President Sharif’s fragile government.
Hizbul Islam movement which now holds parts of Hiiraan region, intensified their movement days after Ethiopian troops evacuated from some parts of the region which borders with Ethiopia.
